Keeping South Carolina Safe

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death caused by products on the market which come under the agency’s jurisdiction. According to the CPSC, deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually.

We assume that the products we use in our everyday lives have been well designed and safely produced, or they wouldn’t be on the market. But they sometimes contain design or manufacturing defects that pose fire, electrical, chemical or mechanical hazards. The CPSC sets product safety standards for a wide range of products; however, some manufacturers do not comply with the standards, knowingly or unknowingly, and distribute items that are dangerous or harmful.

Other government agencies that monitor product safety are the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration and the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs.

What types of products have been recalled?

Most people have read in the newspaper or seen on TV news, or even received mailed notifications, about recalled vehicles. Cars have been released into the marketplace with serious defects that include faulty tires and design flaws that can lead to deadly rollover accidents.

In the last few years, there have been numerous tire recalls due to hazardous defects, such as tread separation. Read more about a lawsuit against Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.

Other companies which have manufactured and sold defective and dangerous tires in the U.S. are Bridgestone, Continental General, Firestone, Goodyear, and Uniroyal-Goodrich.

Toyotas were recalled because gas pedals, floor mats and brakes were blamed for sudden-acceleration accidents which caused nearly 100 deaths.

BMW recalled millions of cars because of defective battery cable covers which posed a fire hazard.

Other children’s products that have been recalled include car seats; strollers; pajamas; and toys.

What should I do if I have been injured by a dangerous product?

To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, call CPSC’s hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 301-595-7054), or visit CPSC’s web site at http://www.saferproducts.gov/.
