Hundreds of Toyota Lawsuits Already Filed
How terrifying it must be to be in a car hurtling down the highway at a high speed, to have no control over the sudden acceleration and to find that even the emergency brake has no effect. From 2000 to 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received more than 6,200 complaints involving sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles, including Camry and Lexus models. During the same period, there were 89 deaths and 57 injuries caused by sudden, uncontrolled acceleration.
Hundreds of related lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts. One California case was settled in 2010 for $10 million. Some cases went to trial and were resolved in favor of Toyota. However, in October 2013, an Oklahoma jury decided that defective electronics in a Toyota Camry caused an accident that left one woman dead and another seriously injured, and they awarded the plaintiff $3 million in damages. It is estimated that Toyota has spent more than $2 billion in legal costs so far fighting the sudden acceleration issue, so they are likely to be amenable to settling more cases in the future.
On the federal level, a $1.6 billion settlement was approved by a federal judge to resolve lawsuits in which owners said the value of their vehicles plummeted after the Toyota recall.
